FSSAI Registration & Food Licence
In short
Every food business operator in India needs FSSAI registration or a licence, depending on size and activity. Basic registration applies to small businesses with turnover up to ₹12 lakh, a state licence to mid-sized businesses, and a central licence to large operators, importers and certain categories. Applications are made on the FSSAI FoSCoS portal.
Overview
FSSAI registration is required for manufacturers, processors, packers, distributors, retailers, restaurants, cloud kitchens, caterers, storage operators and online food sellers. The 14-digit FSSAI number must be displayed on packaging and premises.
Choosing the right category matters: an application in the wrong category is rejected, and operating without the correct licence can attract penalties under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
