Import Export Code (IEC) Registration
In short
An Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit code issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) that any business importing or exporting goods or services from India needs. It is applied for online on the DGFT portal, is linked to the business PAN, and must be updated on the portal every year between April and June to stay active.
Overview
Customs will not clear an import or export shipment without an IEC, and banks need it to process foreign remittances for trade. It is also required to claim export incentives under the Foreign Trade Policy.
An IEC does not expire, but the DGFT deactivates codes that are not updated annually. Deactivated codes can be reactivated by completing the update.

Frequently asked questions
Is IEC required for exporting services?
An IEC is required to claim benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy, and banks commonly ask for it when receiving export proceeds, so service exporters generally obtain one.
Does an IEC need to be renewed?
It has no expiry date, but it must be updated on the DGFT portal every year between April and June. Otherwise it is deactivated.
